§ 11-21. Definitions.

  • The following words, terms and phrases, when used in this article, shall have the meanings ascribed to them in this section, except where the context clearly indicates a different meaning:

    Abattoir means an establishment in which animals are slaughtered or where meat processing, canning, curing, smoking, salting, or rendering or other similar operations take place.

    Food means any raw, cooked or processed edible substance, beverage or ingredient used or intended for use, in whole or in part, for human consumption.

    Food processing plant means any commercial building or establishment in which food is processed or otherwise prepared and packaged for human consumption for sale at some other location.

    Food service establishment means any restaurant, coffee shop, cafeteria, cafe, drive-in, luncheonette, grill, tearoom, oyster bar, sandwich shop, smorgasbord, soda fountain, tavern, bar, cocktail lounge, nightclub, roadside stand, industrial feeding operation, private organization routinely serving the public, mobile food unit, catering kitchen, commissary, or any other place where food or drink is served to or prepared for service to the public with or without charge, but specifically excluding vending machines and candy counters and as defined in Chapter 10D-13 of the Florida Administrative Code.

    Food outlet means any grocery store, food market, meat market, fruit or vegetable market, food warehouse, refrigerated storage facility, freezer locker, and any other place storing or offering food for sale.

    Health authority means the director of the county health unit or his authorized representative.

    Health certificate means a certification of examination issued by the county health authority.

    Health unit means the county health unit, an agency organized in accordance with Florida Statutes, Chapter 154.
