§ 3. Districts; terms of office.

  • The five commissioners shall be required to be qualified electors and reside within the fire district. One commissioner shall be required to reside within each of the four areas described on the map filed in the office of the Supervisor of Elections of Okaloosa County, Florida. The fifth member shall be elected at-large. All qualified electors within the fire district shall be entitled to vote for all commissioners. The initial elected commissioners shall be elected at a special election to be called by the board of county commissioners. The three (3) commissioners attaining the highest number of votes shall be elected for a term to expire on the day following the general election in the year 1992, and the two (2) commissioners receiving the next highest number of votes shall be elected for a term to expire on the day following the general election in the year 1990. In subsequent elections, each commissioner shall be elected for a term of four (4) years. The board of fire commissioners is designated as the governing body of the district. The fire commissioners shall qualify for office in the same manner as is provided for other general county officers. In the event any commissioner ceases to be qualified to act through resignation, removal for cause, or other compelling reason, or in the event a vacancy occurs as the result of a failure to have a duly elected commissioner, the vacancy thereby created shall be filled by appointment by the duly elected fire commissioners of the fire district, until the expiration of the term of the vacant commissioner's seat.
